The DC Council Votes in Favor of Criminals Over Law Abiding Citizens

Washington, DC – (January 18, 2023)

WASHINGTON -The DC Council voted yesterday to override Mayor Bowser’s veto of the Revised Criminal Code Act of 2021. The final version benefits criminals, while victims and their families suffer with soft-on-crime policies. It is widely reported that the Mayor, the Chief of Police, and the US Attorney for DC have all shared their concerns with the criminal code revisions.

Patrick Mara, Chairman of the DC Republican Party, stated, “Yesterday, by a vote of 12-1, penalties for rape, sexual assault, carjackings, robbery, and crimes committed with illegal guns were all reduced. The DC Council routinely panders to national progressive special interests and shrugs off any criticism by calling murder, rape, robbery, and other thuggery, ‘a national problem.’ It is abundantly clear the DC Council values the lives of criminals over District residents, commuters, tourists, Biden Administration political appointees, and Members of Congress. Sadly, the capital of the United States of America has become a city of fear where criminals – especially juvenile offenders – face minimal to no consequences for committing crimes.”

Mara added, “Unfortunately, the ideology of the DC Council values criminals over law-abiding citizens. I yearn for the days when progressives argued for community policing. Today, with our reduced police force, dozens of kids routinely do wheelies down Pennsylvania Avenue on ATVs, and murdered children are considered ‘a national problem’ by the DC Council. It is shocking how little interest most of our elected officials show in reducing crimes against innocent residents and visitors.”

He concluded, “I applaud you, Mayor Bowser, for your sensible veto of this Revised Criminal Code Act of 2021, which clearly needs more revising. And thank you, Ward 8 Councilmember Trayon White, Sr. – no matter what your reasoning – for going against the grain on this progressive craziness.”
