FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
DC Republican Party Statement on the Carjacking of U.S. Representative Henry Cuellar
Washington, DC (October 3, 2023) – Following the carjacking at gunpoint of Congressman Henry Cuellar (D-TX) less than a mile from the U.S. Capitol, the DC Republican Party (DC GOP) issued the following statement:
“What will it take for our local, DC elected officials to support the police? A member of Congress carjacked by three gun-wielding criminals? A member of Congress attacked in her apartment building? A young girl killed by a stray bullet while traveling in the backseat of her parents’ car on Mother’s Day? Two teen boys gunned down on Father’s Day? A juvenile murder rate that has doubled? The highest homicide rate in more than 25 years? Truly, what awful things need to happen before DC’s elected officials take action,” said Patrick Mara, Chairman of the DC GOP.
“Today in DC, there are fewer police than at any time in over 50 years. This didn’t happen overnight and not without repeat warnings from public safety experts. District leaders watched as our police department shrank and crime skyrocketed,” said Mara. “We have a police crisis. Police numbers are way down and will continue to fall because the DC Council is doing nothing. In fact, the decline in police numbers has been celebrated by members of the DC Council.”
He concluded, “Year to date, DC has reported 753 carjackings; that’s more than double on the same date last year. Seventy-five percent of carjackings involve a firearm, some have led to the victim’s death. Murder, robberies, auto theft, violent crime, and, in fact, ALL CRIME has increased across the District. If the DC Council and other officials are unwilling to uphold their oath to protect people, then we must utilize all the tools available to work around them and have them removed through the recall process,” said Mara. “The crime crisis in DC is worsening. We must act if our so-called leaders won’t.”
