FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
DC Republican Party Statement on House Votes on Disapproval Resolutions of the DC Council
Washington, DC – (February 9, 2023)
WASHINGTON -Following the strong bipartisan passage of disapproval resolutions on the DC Council’s non-citizen voting and the revised criminal code, the DC Republican Party (DC GOP) issued the following statement:
Patrick Mara, Chairman of the DC GOP, noted, “Home rule isn’t sacred. We prefer that Congress allow the District to manage its own affairs, but the US House of Representatives acted within the law. 31 Democrats joined with 219 Republicans for disapproval resolution H.J. Res. 26. 42 Democrats voted with 218 in favor of H.J. Res. 24. These votes are a strong bipartisan rebuke of the DC Council. The DC Council wants the conversation to be about Home Rule, not their soft-on crime and Chinese/Russian embassy voting measures. The reality is the House acted to prevent the District from becoming more dangerous and to protect the integrity of our elections. This is admirable regardless of criticism about the process.”
He concluded, “The DC GOP will continue to engage and meet with Republicans in Congress to discuss District issues. We will continue the fight to make our government more politically balanced.”
