The President Declares a Crime Emergency in DC

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Washington, DC – (August 11, 2025)– Today, President Donald Trump declared a crime emergency in the District of Columbia. The DC Republican Party (DC GOP) released the following statement:

“The decisive actions by President Trump should come as no surprise. The DC Council’s soft-on-crime and anti-police legislation has eroded public safety for years. While residents and national leaders demanded change, the Council stubbornly dug in its heels despite an escalating murder rate and other worrisome crime statistics not seen in decades. DC Council members openly boasted on social media about cutting funding for police.  At the same time, the DC Attorney General routinely returned violent juvenile offenders to our streets instead of holding them accountable,” said Patrick Mara, DC Republican Party Chairman.

“Local activists and media complain that Republicans like to ‘meddle in DC.’ However, what choice does any official have when innocent people are victims of crimes or lose their lives? I’ve spoken to dozens of Republican members of Congress and Administration officials. They are all concerned about the continued carjackings, muggings, and murders. This hits close to home for the DC GOP. Our General Counsel, Mike Gill, a husband and father, was murdered by a carjacker. At least two members of Congress, interns, Congressional staff, a DOGE official, and tourists have been carjacked, mugged, assaulted, and murdered, too. President Trump is right to take action. Local officials had their chance and failed.”

The DC Republican Party is composed of registered Republicans living throughout the District of Columbia in all eight wards who are nominated and elected to serve as members. It is a state party with three elected members of the 168-member Republican National Committee.
