WASHINGTON – On July 28th it was widely reported that the DC Chamber of Commerce appointed sitting Councilmember Vincent Orange as its President. The DC Republican Party issued the following statement:
DC Republican Party Chairman José Cunningham noted, “This is one of the most obvious conflicts of interest I have ever seen. The timing of this appointment reflects poorly on both the DC Chamber of Commerce and Councilmember Orange. How is it acceptable to appoint a sitting member of DC’s local legislative body to head an advocacy organization?” Cunningham continued, “I’d like to know how Councilmember Orange will balance his duties as Chairman of the Committee on Business, Consumer & Regulatory Affairs with that of being an independent steward for DC businesses. In addition to the glaring ethics violation, it’s a sad day when the champion of a $15 an hour minimum wage – among many other pro-union legislative efforts – becomes the head of the organization whose mission is to champion business. DC businesses might as well pack it in and move to Virginia and Maryland if the DC Chamber is their champion. What a sad day for DC businesses.”
